This is a Malthus inspired writing; it renders homage to his great contribution to political economy of the Modern Period. His contribution consists of admitting relevance of population’s autonomous position in mode of production and consumption. But Malthus’s role in modern economy would be subsiding to nil without Club of Rome’s insight into the mechanisms of operation of the Malthusian “population law”. Stepping on Club of Rome’s writings this book argues the necessity of going further than sheer population size reduction. “Population overgrowth” will remain a sheer arithmetic abstraction without relating it to the mode of consumption. This is mode of consumption with current liberal political economic dispensation that renders impossible for the food equation to be steadily equated. Change mode of consumption is tantamount to a real revolution since the entire logic of growth and development with contemporary economy is cost, to say, consumption-based. Will current ruling elites’ intellectual level prove high enough to comprehend the food security situation and venture into changing the liberal mode of production and consumption? Sincerely, I doubt it.
