One of the most important events to occur in the twentieth century was the collapse of the Soviet Union. The U.S.S R. once maintained condominium with the United States in the sphere of international relations; however, in 1991 the vast expanse that Moscow once controlled collapsed under the weight of its own internal, socioeconomic contradictions. This event was a watershed and its significance is twofold: it transformed the international system from a bipolar to a unipolar one, and it altered the geopolitical balance-of-power in the Caucasus and greater Caspian region in manifold ways, which will represent the focus of this study.
